Collecting a Semen Sample

Read all the instructions carefully before collecting a semen sample. It’s important to follow the instructions so the sample can be tested in a timely manner.  

  • A doctor’s order or referral is required to perform semen analysis. Please ensure you have an order from your doctor at the time of registration. 

  • The semen analysis is time sensitive. All collections and/or drop-off are by appointment only. 

  • You can provide the semen in two different ways, at the site or from your home. 

    1. Specimen collection at the site 

      • Please schedule an on-site collection by phone, e-mail, or web appointment software. Detailed instructions will be provided on-site. 

    2. At home collection

      • A $50 deposit is required for you to receive the specimen collection kit.  Please follow the instructions inside to ensure accurate analysis of your specimen 

      • Please note that once the specimen is collected at home, the specimen needs to be brought back to Anderson Lab within 1 hour of the collection – please call 3 hours before collecting to ensure testing can be performed when you drop off the sample. 


Before You Collect a Sample

  • You should not have had sexual activity for 2 to 5 days before collection. It should be more than 2 days from your last ejaculation but no more than 7 to 10 days.

  • If you are planning to collect the sample at home, please pick up a specimen collection kit from Anderson Labs. 

  1. Collect your sample only in the container provided by Anderson Labs.

  2. Do not collect your sample in other types of containers, plastic bags, or condoms. 

  • If you plan to collect from home, there is a $50 deposit which will be applied toward your Semen Analysis, please follow the instructions from the laboratory about home collection or you there can be a forfeiture of your deposit and may require additional charges for replacement specimen collection kit.



How to Collect Your Sample

  • Clean the head of your penis with wet, soapy towelettes or cotton balls.

    • If you are not circumcised, pull back your foreskin and cleanse.

  • Rinse the cleansed area with a new towelette or cotton ball that is wet with plain water.

  • Dry your penis well before you collect the sample.

  • Remove the lid from the collection container.
    Make sure the container is clean and dry.

  • The sample should be collected by masturbation into the container.

  • Lubricants or condoms should not be used while collecting the sample. They can kill the sperm and affect your test results.

  • If pubic hair or thread from your clothing falls into the container, do not take it out. The lab will take it out using a clean tool.

  • Put the lid back on the container.
    Make sure the container is closed firmly and tightly.


After Collecting Your Sample

Write the following information on the container with a pen or marker that will not run if the ink gets wet:

  • full name

  • date of birth

  • date and time of collection.

Place the container in the biohazard bag provided with the collection packet.

Place the biohazard bag containing the container in the paper sack provided.

Keep and transport the paper sack with the container at room temperature (65 – 85 oF), Do NOT refrigerate or freeze.


Returning Your Sample

  • Please bring a photo ID such as a driver’s license with you.

  • If you collected the sample at the lab, give the container to one of the lab staff.

  • If you have collected the sample at home, bring the container to the lab at your appointment time. 

    • Confirm testing can be done 3 hours before collecting and the container must be received within 1 hour of collection.
